Jane Woodley - our protagonist - was born in 1921 and raised in Malaya. A Rooster by the Oriental zodiac, she lives true to her sign showing traits such as verve, devotion and candour. Along with… captivating beauty. Alike her British father, she is a Malayan at heart, with Singapore central to her being. A homeland she cherishes more than her own existence.

A child of 1918, our protagonist Danny Miller, is a scion of the wealthy Müllers, a Bavarian clan rooted in Penang. Shu Mei, his true love, was born a year after into humble means, under an auspicious sign in the Chinese horoscope. Joined at the heart since infancy, bitter events shatter their intimacy and they flee their heavenly isle. War begins. They resist the Germans and the Japanese, but their battles closer to home would prove more grievous and deadly beyond measure.
